Scary!!
I think you are on the right track suspecting the needle material, but if I 
were you I would seek the advice of a true expert, like John Cooper, of Skyport.

  I just put the above carb. back into service on my C 85. I rebuilt it

  fuel running out of it. I have it apart and I found no problem. It has
  the P/N 390077 needle. Aircraft Spruce has a note that it will expand
