Frank,

KFDK is at 300 feet and most of the airports close to here are under 1000 ft 
but we always lean, especially on the ground . Check the oil pressure , then 
lean and proceed. Land, clear the runway, lean.

  Thanks, Jim. I will try that. Since I am operating at near sea level, 
  I never touch the mixture. It never dawned on me that there might be 
  another reason to lean out the engine. I assume that leaning the 
  engine below 5,000 MSL will work if I get the rpm's up to 1,5000 or 
  more.
