And I agree that a Sport Pilot does not have in depth preventative maintenance training, but why should he be able to do said maintenance "under the provisions of 43.3" on a plane he owns or operates with a LSA airworthiness and not on a standard certificated aircraft owned or operated by him as a LSA? The allowed preventative maintenance is specifically outlined in Part 43.3, and gives very little lattitude. (doesn't allow a pilot to screw it up too much) (h) The holder of at least a sport pilot certificate may approve an aircraft owned or operated by that pilot and issued a special airworthiness certificate in the light-sport category for return to service after performing preventive maintenance under the provisions of §43.3 (g). The issue is that a private pilot has received rudimentary training in the maintenance requirements of certified aircraft. A Sport pilot has not. The Ercoupe does not qualify as a Light Sport Aircraft. It qualifies to be flown by the holder of a Light Sport Pilot Certificate. The Ercoupe is still a certificated aircraft and must be maintained as such.
