Ken,

In the beginning, (more or less) getting your license in a 2-control Coupe
resulted in a license limited to 2-control aircraft.

Sometime (in the '50s or '60s?), the FAA dropped that and those who took
their checkrides in 2-control Coupes just got a license.

I think it was around '93 or '94 or so when the FAA, in its infinite wisdom,
decided to impose the license restriction on those who took their checkrides
in 2-control Coupes.

I don't think there had ever been a change in the regulations. But somebody
noticed that the regulations required the demonstration of slips and such in
the checkride so they figured they'd better impose the restriction on those
who didn't do so.

Your license is good. But, the new pilot candidates wanting to use their
2-control Coupes for the checkride have to deal with this issue.
