Robert, Yes it's the only way to fly.I found a CFI who had a day job, he is an
engineer with northrup-gruman, we found the plane together Ercoure 415CD did
most lessons on the weekend, or after work in the summertime. it worked out
perfect and at less than one half the cost. i suggest you find your CFI first.
good luck, larry C.

Hi Robert,

The answer is yes to both questions, but check with your specific CFI first.  I
don’t want to be presumptuous, but maybe I can contribute some general counsel
to those on this list trying to figure out if learning to fly makes sense:

I bought my Ercoupe before getting my license and it worked out great, but I
had a few things in my favor.  My son already had his license so he gave me
plenty of unofficial help and I had a CFI friend who had to be forced to take
legal tender.  On the other end of the spectrum, we have recently witnessed
Frank Nelson and Kim Blackseth who have had more difficult paths to travel
(financially and otherwise) to achieve their dream.  To anyone on the fence, I
might suggest that you contact these guys and ask if it was worth it.

Flying my Ercoupe (especially with friends, family and kids) is about the
coolest thing I do.  I know it sounds trite, but learning to fly really will
enrich your life on many levels.  In that sense, it’s good value. As others
have hinted, rather than trying to figure everything out before the fact, why
not meet up with your nearest CFI and schedule some flight training hours.
Once you get yourself in the game, things have a way of working out.

Cheers,
Bill

Robert asked:  I'm looking to buy an Ercoupe, then saving for my lessons. It's
a 415-
D therefore I'm looking at near $8000 for my PPL. My question is: Can
I do most of the solo hours in my own 'coup and save money on the
rentals? Do CFIs do that?
Thanks,
Robert
