Good thinking James.

If the valves in the fuel pump are bad, this path will be opened for the fuel.
I too experienced some flow back into the wing tanks after engine shutdown, but
it was maybe half a gallon, not two.
One easy way to test it is to close the fuel valve to the fuel pump as well
after engine shutdown. It is located toward the firewall on the right side.

If you suspect a leaking fuel valve FROM the header tank, I'd suggest taking
the valve out and cleaning it. It is a simple conical design that should work
when the surfaces of the moving parts are clean and without scratches.

Either way. The problem is a nuisance that is relatively easy to come by.

This is just a thought, but could the header tank be leaking back through a
faulty fuel pump?
