Some states (including Kansas) will not let you trailer a load that
extends x feet beyond the taillites (3' in Kansas).
The red flag might keep you legal in daylight (if not raining, for Ks).

I’d be very surprised if you had any actual trouble.
I’m not sure how I’d attach the red flags often required on
dangling loads.
