Hi Mike,

Per ATC 787, p. 8, item 106. "in accordance with Note 4" which, on p. 11, (b) requires the oil tank baffles when McCauley or Sensenich metal props or the Beech controllable pitch prop is installed on a 415-D with the C-75 to C-85 engine "upgrade".

While it is true in a practical sense that anything one can get installed and approved with a 337 must be OK without a 337, the difference is one of prudence and legality. You can operate 10% overgross in Alaska, but don't try to do it in the lower U.S.!

The "FAA/PMA approval" for the skull cap as part of the prop, as opposed to part of the airframe, is interesting. Some Ercoupes have the CF McCauley (elliptical tip) prop which is apparently not approved ;<)

Regards,

William R. Bayne

I thought the oil tank baffle was called for when a variable pitch prop was installed.

I'm still looking for my Coupe book with no luck. I did find "Stick and Rudder" and did some review. Reading or rereading "Stick and Rudder" is way more important in my eyes than worring about the cooling loss with a skull cap spinner. If you can get it installed and approved with a 337 it must be ok with out a 337. It is approved for certain props. FAA/PMA'd. Skull Cap for Small Size Spinner. Diameter 5-1/4". Sensenich 74CK-0, 74CK-2, 76AM6-2, 76CK, 72CK, 76AK-2, 74FKT, 74FK; McCauley CM74, CM73, CM71, CM70, LM72. Code 4

skull cap because someone was to cheap to buy the correct one
Speaking of cooling I have seen many 85hp without the baffles on the
oil tank they still cool within limits.glenn
