In all my 18,000 hrs flying,( not all in ercoupes ) with thousands of landings at hundreds of airports - I have never had a surprise ramp check, mine are mandatory, I have to for low level waivers and the like. Seen a couple ramp checks here on our airport, I believe it is called a field trip, and show & tell. They do not open cowlings or doors, just peer through windows, and may write the registered owner for further information if need be.
