When Continental developed the O200 they made changed to the case to 
strengthen it, particularly in the area of the center main bearing.  The 
center studs were replaced with through bolts.  Prior to that the 
maximum continuous RPM allowed was (IIRC) 2575.  The C90 was certified 
for 2625 RPM and 95 HP but with a 5 minute limit.

Also, as Hartmut pointed out, there are differences in the valve train.  
The C90 and O200 have forged hardened cam shafts whereas the C85 and 
down were cast.  Valve springs are different, too, and some versions 
have 3 springs where others only use 2.

Bottom line, if you exceed 2575 RPM you're a test pilot and all bets are 
off.
