By simply loosening the LH and RH stacks, I was able to get my muffler on and
off without touching the cowling. Until "we" (bit of a funny story) broke off
the exhaust stud on the RH stack. And then "we" also broke off an ez-out
trying to pull the stud. Then "we" had to pull off the entire cowling, and the
cylinder to get it taken apart. It's all good though, because all of this lead
to finding a few rather interesting holes in my exhaust, that are now replaced
with an entirely new one.

Long story short, you shouldn't have to pull the bottom cowling, but it's not
hard to do if you need the space.
