For commercial 70% peroxide, it was a much better catalyst, in terms of
short-term catalytic effectiveness.  They weren't stupid; they tried
silver, it didn't work. 

However, as you point out, useful lifetime is another story.  I doubt that
you could make a useful cat pack out of Mojave dirt, appealing though the
thought is.
