That's because taxpaying folks have figured out that NASA has decided that THEY CAN'T GO. As Tom Rogers has said many times: "NASA had the American people's good will and threw it away [by not helping to nurture commercial space transportation the way commercial flight was nurtured]; and everyone now at NASA doesn't understand that the Apollo program is over to sixteen decimal places." Which is why the small privately funded new starts are getting a lot of friendly interest from just plain folks. And a few reporters have also figured it out: we're building stuff that will let the hoi polloi BUY A RIDE TO SPACE.The biggest problem with publicly funded space projects is the perceived need to keep the public happy. Well the public isn't happy, they're apathetic. So publicly funded space projects are in trouble.
Gosh, what a concept.
