Just curious, is there a voltage difference between the two devices?
One voltmeter lead to ground on both devices with first the serial cable
disconnected and then the try it with the cable connected. The meter
should read 0 volts for both cases. I think you mentioned putting a
scope on it so you would have seen an ac problem, but a dc potential
difference might have gotten by the test.
