I remember a long time ago suggesting hanging gizmocopter from a rope, either upside down or right side up, or creating gizmo-on-a-stick and attempting "level flight" that way. Seems to me that should still work.
You could run the string over a pulley with a counterweight, then it could actually lift and descend.
