Below is what I personally would need for a complete replacement of my
system at home. We might want to compile a list of these for what each of
us would require, figure out the overlap, and start building services or
applets/widgets that we would actually use -- and perhaps delegate coding
responsibilities, if we want to go that route.

 - Raster image editor (Photoshop, or perhaps Pixen)
 - Vector image editor (Illustrator, Freehand)
 - Text editor with syntax highlighting (SubEthaEdit)
 - Flash editor (Could be done with a modified text editor -- I've been
working on a replacement)
 - Font manager
 - Photo manager
 - Music player/manager
 - Movie player
 - Email client
 - Web browser
 - Chat client
 - FTP client
 - Archiving tools (zip, tar)
 - PDF reader

What I need is fairly non-typical. For "average" home users, I would offer
up the following list:

 - Web browser
 - Email client
 - Chat client
 - Word processor
 - Music player/manager
 - Movie player
 - Simple image editor
 - Photo manager
 - PDF reader
 - Selection of games

Anyone else care to add to the list?

J.
