Hi all, I'm sorry if this is the wrong list for this - is there a users' list instead?
Anyhow, I'm trying to get Etoile up and running on my Gentoo linux machine. I followed the build instructions from your website build both gnustep and Etoile with clang and everything seemed to work okay. (I would recommend adding a note at the end of: http://etoileos.com/downloads/installtrunk/ regarding running the setup.sh script to finish the install - I don't think that is mentioned anywhere and I only found out about it via google when I didn't know what to do next). After this, I start Etoile from gdm and it seems to start up without too much trouble. I have visible the menubar and the dock and the default wallpaper - so far so good! However, popup windows (like menus etc) will not actually appear when they should. If I click on the star on the left end of the menubar, it turns black. I know a menu should appear under it, but nothing does. If I click there repeatedly very quickly, occasional glimpses of a menu do appear but disappear again immediately after. The same effect happens if I right-click items in the dock. If I build and run an app like SystemPreferences.app, its window appears correctly its menu titles do appear in the menubar, but again none of the menus will appear underneath any of them when clicked. Finally, if I continue the repeated clicking I mentioned for more than a few seconds, whole session seems to crash and I need to restart X. Now, my first suspect is that I'm using the open-source radeon drivers (xf86-video-ati) - do any of you know of any incompatibilities bewteen Etoile and these? I just built gnustep-back with the default options, so I think it's using the cairo backend. Cairo is something I've installed through an official gentoo package. I've tried it in both opengl and non-opengl flavours but the effect is the same. Does anyone have any idea what might help? I'm not very knowledgeable about UNIX so I'm not sure how to really start debugging this sort of thing. I'd be very grateful for any assistance as Etoile looks very exciting! I love the idea of a polished GNUstep-based desktop system on Linux.
