It isn't considered obvious, it's just that we are a development platform, but 
not a "desktop environment" not even an experimental one at this point ;-)
The script is unsupported because the user-visible stuff is highly broken as 
explained in the warning at the top of the INSTALL file.

If you want to fiddle with Étoilé as a desktop environment, unless you are 
motivated to contribute some code, I suggest that you wait until we post some 
news on the blog about the desktop environment status.

We are writing our own window manager, see Services/Private/ProjectManager. But 
it's not usable yet.

It will need a custom one in the long run. But for now, you can run existing 
applications or examples within GNOME, KDE or some other window manager.

You could try WindowMaker or OpenBox.
