Hmm... Another possible cause is your frameworks and applications are compiled with different version of GNUstep if you have an older GNUstep installed before. To make thing simpler, could you do 'defaults delete NSGlobalDomain GSAppKitUserBundles' which removes the loading of theme and horizontal menu. And try 'openapp Typewriter.app' again in WindowMaker and see.
