  I just want to mention that fontconfig is only used by cairo backend,
  not art backend.
  So regular GNUstep users will not notice the difference.
  But I am all for cairo backend for the future.
  If you have copyright assigned to FSF,
  you can also improve cairo backend to
  make it play nicer with extermal font manager.
  I think it would make your work easier,
  for example, notifing all GNUstep application
  when users disable font in FontManager.app.

  Another thing I really like is to have a fallback font mechanism.
  (I think NSFontManager has a -preferredFonts: for that).
  So if current font miss some glyphs, it will use the next font to
display that glyphs.
  But it may be too much to ask. :)
