i picked up a 6GB jukebox a few months ago and have
done some recording with it. it records in
uncompressed wav format at 16/44 or 16/48 - i use
16/44 since that keeps it cd ready without resampling.
the stereo line-in is a 1/8" mini headphone and the
signal is therefore analog. there is also no mic
pre-amp, so plugging a mic into it would require a
pre-amped mic, or the signal would be pretty low and
require heavy normalization. there are 'gain' and
'boost' settings within the jukebox, but the higher
you go with them, the more noise they introduce to the
recording, so i keep them both set at 0. all of the
taping i have done with it has been directly off a
multi-track mixing board when jamming at my friend's
studio. i use the headphone out on the board to the
nomad's line-in through a male-male 1/8" cord. with
the board's headphone volume set at 5, i get VERY good
recordings, noticeably much more 'hissless' than
2-track cassettes recorded off the same board at the
same time. so if you can patch out of the soundboard
into the nomad at 16/48, the results would
theoretically at least equal those of the analog in on
a DAT. there may be some discrepancies due to the
quality of the A/D converters and other hardware
components involved, but mainly what is lacking on the
nomad is VU meters and a simple record button - right
now it requires a couple of steps to 'arm' and then
record. it is also not so good at cataloging
recordings (track naming issues) and it splits every
recording in to 112 MB chunks - they stitch back
together seamlessly, but it could be an issue with
some. i find it's best to hit record once and let it
go until you're done, rather than trying to edit while
recording. provided the drive is not full of mp*s,
the 6GB drive provides over 8 hours recording time at
16/44. the nomad takes any standard laptop hard drive
(2.5") though it must be formatted before
installation, so upgrades abound - i've seen 40GB
jukeboxes on ebay and the limit seems to be the
current limit of 2.5" drives. the firmware is
upgradeable and Creative is fixing bugs and advancing
features with each new release - there is even an
infra-red port on the front which is not currently
supported but presumably will be in the future.
transferring the recordings to a pc (or mac) is done
with usb, so it's all digital, but takes about 1 hour
for every 2 hours recorded. the nomad jukebox 2
(coming soon) will be firewire. now if only we could
get them to do a 24/96 version...
