Buy a nice pair of quality headphones, hook it too a nice output and then play a MP3 encoded song and one that wasn't. Try it with any good quality recording and you will notice a difference. This test of course is greatly effected by what kind of music you are listening to.
Most computers do not have nice enough speakers and sound cards to tell the difference, it really requires high end gear or else a nice stereo reciever.
