Thanks for the reply.  Yea, sorry I wasn't very
precise.  This is the error statement that I got:

make: ***No rule to make target 'xconfig'. Stop.

FYI, the files in my linux (/usr/src/linux-2.4.8)
folder are:

kernel.config_new
kernel.config_old
.config.old
.depend
.hdepend

And three folders:

arch/    (nothing within this folder)
include/ 
   (with these files:
    include/linux/modules/nls_utf8.stamp
    include/linux/modules/nls_utf8.ver )
scripts/  
   (this folder has the following files:
     kconfig.tk*
     tkparse*
     tkcond.o
     tkgen.o
     tkparse.o )


When I built this PC, I did a standard install of
Mdk8.1.  I was trying to learn how to compile the
kernel a few months ago, and although I don't remember
what I did precisely, I screwed things up quite a bit.
 I re-installed Mandrake and since then things have
worked fine, with a few exceptions.
