Oh boy, this almost leans toward activism but I'm not
up for subbing to that list so I'll just add to this.
:)
Yes, support your favorite local or obscure band BUT
maybe go about it this way.... Receive permission from
the artist to distribute just a few of their songs.
Each artist or group should be able to make the
decision of what they want available on the web. This
would expose each artist and encourage those enjoying
a few of their songs to actually invest in the CD.
Therein lies the other problem though. If you walk
into a 'music' store like Sam Goody's then you have to
'invest' in those CDs since they are almost never
below $15. Why not create a repository where artists
that would like their music shared can also sell their
music via a qualified channel devoted to really just
covering their costs and helping others.
Oh, and most certainly encourage the use of ogg.

As a side note the scrawny little white guy Tim is
thinking about goes by the moniker of Eminem, not M&M.
Of course if you really want to listen to a white guy
rapping then I'd highly suggest KJ-52. You won't hear
him utter a single word of blasphemy and it's safe for
kids of all ages.
