I think you'd be on firmer ground, ethically and legally, if you
got the copyright holders's permission to do that.  If the artist
is self-published, then he holds the copyright himself, and just might
be happy to do it.

That's the problem.  The reason Britney is so popular is because huge
numbers of people want to listen to unchallenging music like hers.
(Like, "Duh...")  Unless you can subvert/bypass the marketing machine,
huge numbers of people will continue to want to listen to the
Bubblehead of the Week.

As for personal behavior, yes, by all means, listen to local,
accessible artists, and tell your friends about them - they're
often undiscovered jewels.
