Jack,

As you know, I own a Sun Blade 100 workstation, which is based on the robust 64 bit Ultra-Sparc II chip.

It is "legacy free", using USB for both keyboard and mouse ( NOT the Sun equivalent of the PS/2 or crappy optical 3-button mouse that I remember using).

It also has 2 Firewire ports, so when Linux Firewire support is "ready for prime time"; I'm ready to climb aboard the Sparc Linux express.

Another intriguing possibility with the box is the SunPCI card, a PCI card containing an genuine Intel Celeron 700 Mhz chip, which along with some Sun-supplied software; allows for running Windows Apps at native speed within a window of a Sun Blade workstation running Solaris 8 (or later). Of course, Linux support for the SunPCI is not yet available. But it should leave emulators such as Win4Lin, VirtualPC, VMWare, in the dust.

I'd recommend two things. One, get an Ultra 1 or 2 with two cpu, say Ultra2 with 2x300Mhz. Make sure these have an hme (100Mb nic) and a Creator video card as it will do 24bpu. Or go for an Ultra 10 or 30. Again with hme, Creator. You'll have choice of any BSD, Aurora Linux, Debian Linux, Gentoo Linux, or Solaris for those. My recommendation is based on you getting the most bang for the buck from my personal experience.

Let me know if you need more details,

Jack Morgan
Gentoo/Sparc
