I'll echo Cory and Joseph: works for me. I have 200 Gb drives in two
systems, both running 2.4.20 kernels.

I'll also echo their advice: you need a kernel version 2.4.19 or
newer. As for the motherboard, just attach the drive to your existing
IDE controller. If the BIOS doesn't correctly report the drive's
size, you need to upgrade the BIOS.

You might also install the PCI card and see whether a recent Linux
distro detects the card and/or the disk. KNOPPIX is excellent for
that kind of thing. (-:

What kind of motherboard do you have, and how old is it? I'm using an
ASUS CUWE-RM, 2000 vintage (I think) and some kind of Intel Slot 1
board from 1998. I didn't have to upgrade the BIOS on either one.

I have a 2+ year old box: an ABIT KT7A-RAID motherboard (disabled RAID functionality intentionally) with a 1.2 Ghz Athlon.

About 1.5+ year ago, I flashed the BIOS with the latest upgrade then available.

My "sandbox" system died recently ( an Athlon 1.33 Ghz with an ASUS motherboard; both CPU and motherboard died from overheating); So, I am exploring the prospect of a new CPU, motherboard with the latest BIOS, built-in UDMA-6, ATA-133 support.

From the documentation I got with the Maxtor 160 GB HD, I anticipated that I could potentially step on a landmine.

I want to multi-boot Win XP Pro and SuSe 8.2 Pro and I did NOT want to be stuck in a situation where I would be devoting the entire 160 GB to that "other family of OSes".
