Excellent. I have enjoyed watching VMD over the past few years, it is
always amazing to see the new research using those amazing
visualizations; and it seems that there is a deep wealth of
domain-specific optimizations in the codebase, as well as a lot of work
to develop great new features for the VMD as a whole.

Please do post any other great finds you happen across...
I for one am curious!

| It is not Totally Free, but you might want to check out SGI's
| Performer-- they made a linux version, and it an entirely programmable
| 3D system, for modelling, simulation, games, ther interactive apps,
| etc. It has scientific precision.... in general, as I grok it.
|
| Also, you might want to check out some visualization libraries, like
| VTK(the visualization toolkit), which is used in some 3D stuff like
| VMD: http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/
| http://public.kitware.com/VTK/
|
| And if you need photorealistic renderings of mathematically precise
| scenes (what I deem to be some of autocad's capability), I'm sure you
| know something about the Persistance of Vision raytracer, povray:
| Blender can interoperate with the .pov filetypes AFAIK; also there are
| some other nifty [stand-alone] tools to make and animate .pov files --
| I used one that calculated geodesics once, it was neat-o...
|
| 'Hope this is helpful and new info for you!

| | The project I am building involves engineering illustration and
| | speculative science illustration. Its a given that there are
| | $10,000+ workstations and$1,000+ software like AutoCAD and Pro/E. I
| | was willing to spend the money a few years back, but I decided that
| | the tools I use would need to be obtainable by my target audience
| | and I am committed to Linux migration for its superior qualities.
| | After buying Photoshop, and seeing that I was moving to Linux, I
| | realized that I could not afford to pursue expensive software for a
| | windows environment while in transition. Many of the powerful tools
| | are still in windows and, although there is WINE, Linux has to catch
| | up. Fortunately I found Blender to have many of the qualities I was
| | looking for. I am monitoring some Linux/CAD forums and hoping to
| | hear more about potential software. There doesn't seem to be a
| | freeware 3D CAD program for Linux that is AutoCAD equivalent, or
| | even close. Its my observation that Linux is in graphic infancy and
| | I am having to backtrack to windows for a while, but my fastest box
| | is now set to run Blender.
