Ben,
I too held on to my DSL modems for a couple years, then ended up selling them
on ebay for about $30 each... I gave up on DSL, I had way to many problems
with qwest. I have had comcast cable both in eugene, and out here, and have
had very few problems. In eugene, every comptuer I setup got its own IP
(probably because it was a fresh segment, they hadnt locked things down
yet...) Out here, I only get one IP, and it gets locked to the one network
card you setup on, so other computers on your lan wont get access. I was able
to repair much of my computer equipment (man that was a relief when my
primary hard drive came back to life!), and found an old p-133 box at a
thrift store for $15, and turned it into a firewall (woo hoo, now I have any
computer online!!!) using that particular NIC.
I brought my brand new cable modem with me only to find out that its only
saving me $3/month. When I setup my cable account in eugene, I was able to
pick from one of many deals they currently had running (watch the tv ads,
some deals are pretty sweet! I wasnt able to get the best deal I had seen
(Free everything for 3 months), but was able to get their $10 modem/$10
install/$10 first month deal ($30 first month, aprox $50 month after). Basic
cable was basicly free, as it was $13/month, and with both you get a $10
discount. I wasnt able to get such a good deal out here, I got $30 install
(from $150!) and first month free.
Performance was better out there too... there seems to be a 75k/file cap (but
you can down load many files at a time at that rate. ISO's take a few hours
to download (vs less than one hour).
I never had an issue with DHCP, however some hardware swapping showed me that
they do lock you into using only one NIC (probably mac address). So... If you
setup your network, use a desktop computer that you can swap that nic out,
and put it in a firewall/gateway box (ie dont use your laptop, unless you
want to make it your gateway!)
Ive only had it running for a couple days, so I cant say about the service
out here, but in eugene, I had no problems for the few months I had it.

Good Luck :)

Jamie

In short, at least give the penguin a fair viewing. If you still don't
like it, that's ok: that's why I'm boss. I simply know better than you do.
