Oh... yeah, you can definetly have problems while using linux, I never said you cant have problems. I said you never have those problems (like where you turn your computer on, you get a "new hardware found", please reboot your computer - rinse, lather, repeat. Where your machine is in an endless cycle of not installing the driver for a mouse, and rebooting anyway. I have had a simular problem with fsck, where it booted, fsck'd, then gave you a few options, and it never fixed the file system (which meant that it would do this everytime it booted, and would only boot into RO mode. Disabling fdisk at boot was the only way I figurd out to fix it (yes, I did try fdisking manually, but even when it sucessfully fdisked, it still did the fdisk at boot, and failed!)
I did also explain to the woman, that some windows devices require you to install the softwar first, then shut down the computer, then start the computer (so when it autodetects the new hardware, it can find the driver). Which is also what I would suggest in your example too... why not configure your your mouse, then shut down and swap the hardware?
