MacRenewal is cool, but they're for Macs only. I'd wager there are 10 times as much non-Mac equipment that could use a good tax-deductible home. Plus, based on the website, MacRenewal appears to be sending the equipment to other communities. I am thinking more locally.

Freecycle <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FreecycleEugene/> - neat idea. A Yahoo Group for offering and acquiring free stuff. I joined, but based on the postings, not particularly oriented to computer equipment. Plus, if someone does not already have a computer, not a particularly useful tool.

Freegeek.org - Yeah, I was thinking exactly like that! Though, I have to wonder about this:
You can recycle <http://www.freegeek.org/recycle.php> your old computer equipment. We accept any computers, in any condition; there is a $10 fee for all monitors.

That's even worse than the $5 St Vinny's wanted. What's up with the fee for monitors? Guess I'll ask FreeGeek. Just out of curiosity, and not asking for any commitments, would anyone be interested in participating in something like FreeGeek for Eugene? The biggest hurdle, aside from sufficient people-power, would be acquiring space for storage and testing.

Having done this "free stuff" posting before, it occured to me that it might be of some use to the community to provide a sort of "Humane Society" for computer equipment... But entirely free, or close to that. Could make an active effort to assemble Linux-based systems, and donate them to those who might need them.

That would be my cue to mention MacRenewal. They're a local* nonprofit
that takes in old Macs, refurbishes them, and gives them to schools
and other needy groups.

Here's the web page. http://www.macrenewal.org/
