It's not that they don't have another mode of that aspect ration, but that
X didn't ask about any other modes of that aspect ratio.  Used to be that
you would specify your modelines yourself.  Now X comes with a large set
of canned modelines.  If you want something unusual, you still need a
modeline for it.

960x600 is a good choice if you can find or make the right modeline.
480x300 is also a possibility, but what would you do with it?
