I like KDE. I don't have significant Windows experience to make me
feel that way.

History: KDE started about a year ahead of GNOME. For the first
few years, KDE was much further developed, but relied on Qt which
had a non-free license. Qt was re-released under the GPL nearly five
years ago.

GNOME has had more support from large companies (e.g., Sun, RedHat).
GNOME is also more US-centric. KDE is mostly developed in Germany.
But GNOME has always been catching up. IMHO, they haven't caught up
yet.

Both are usable desktops. They are more similar than different.
I can get a lot more done using either than I can with Windows.

I have heard that if you have a license for real VMware, you can build
arbitrary virtual machines and use them in VMplayer. I haven't done
this myself. (I do have a license, so I should try it.)

Kubuntu is Ubuntu plus KDE. I have recently installed that on three
laptops and I'm liking it a lot.
