Is your 20GB drive formatted as a FAT partition? (FAT-16, FAT-32?)
The last external USB drive I bought was pre-formatted as NTFS, ug!

My new Toshiba has a USB port on the front.
It'll play .mp3s and jpegs without a problem (shuffle or sequential).
It plays most "divx like" avi files without a problem, and most mpeg
files (though FF/Rew is an issue).
It does not recognize my 20gb portable harddrive(though the
documentation shows a portable HDD being used). It will recognize my
thumbdrive without problems.

It will also do all of the above from the built-in DVD. I haven't yet
tried doing it from the built-in VCR.

I don't know if it'd running Linux. If it is, it's a well-hidden
implementation.
