You mean "Hey everybody, 7.1 is outdated and we are discontinuing the version." You are "welcome to buy the next version so that we can continue to make a great product that isn't so damn bloated your system comes to a standstill while waiting for it to finish loading".
If you prefer to continue leeching the software the next free version (7.5) is available from http://free.grisoft.com . FWIW, I tell people if they like the product it is only $30 for a two year license or they can continue with the free version listed above. As long as it does what it is supposed to do I will continue to recommend it. With the number of Windows boxes I fix I can tell you that no other "free for non-commercial use" anti-virus software is less troublesome than AVG. Sorry but I've played with NOD32, Kapersky, AntiVir, Panda, McCrappy, Norton, ClamAV, and others. Keep in mind, ClamAV is capable of detecting viruses but requires intervention to clean the system. AVG works "quite well" for the majority of home users. As for "commercial AV" I haven't had too many issues with Trend or CA though I've seen them both fail miserably on installs or updates. Trend had an issue a couple years ago where an update nuked quite a few systems.
