I second the card reader suggestion. I don't even use my camera's
USB.
I see the HP Photosmart m305 uses MMC or SD. I heard Linux now
supports SD, but I haven't tried it. MMC is no problem. If you
have trouble with SD, switch to MMC.
But be sure the MMC reader you buy is supported. A lot of card
readers don't work under Linux. A good way to go is to buy it
from a vendor that supports Linux or says the reader works with
Linux.

I've got fully patched Mepis 6.5 SMP (derived from Kubuntu Dapper)
running, sort of, on a new Intel D946GZIS motherboard and a dual core
processor. My boot log is full of error messages, principally having to
do with a need to persuade Intel to do a better job with its BIOS and
the 915 screen resolution driver being non-functional.
But the immediate problem is that the system does not autodetect the
camera, the manual install includes no driver for the particular camera,
and I can't find one for it. That wasn't a problem with Mepis when I was
still running an i586 processor.
The upshot is that I would really appreciate a suggestion for where to
start working around this problem. If I can get this camera thing
solved, then I can return to my recovery plan and deal with the other
problems later.
Any suggestions?
