Prob with the library's system is that it has to integrate with the
city's core OS; it is not on its own. So you'd either have to get them
to disconnect from the city in order to go Open Source or else get the
whole city to do so.
My despair came back when the library's original ulysses (unix) system
announced they weren't going to develop beyond y2k and the City decided
to go with Polaris (nicknamed polarisite).
Not to discourage but to give an indication of what a bureaucratic long
haul it will be to get anything changed, once the library had decided
they wanted to do something about patrons having to run the gauntlet of
street trash just to get through the doors and into the library, it took
four years for anything to happen.
