Joshua,
   Hopefully you can read this.  I am not exactly sure what the
problem is. My mail was also sent from gmail on an android phone and
as you say was utf-8 encoded. I  think your browser might be
overriding the messages encoding. In the view menu of the browser can
you check what the encoding is set to?
