By satellite (how prophetic!), at the Telluride Tech Festival:
----
"I'm now convinced that Mars doesn't support life - it's infested with life.
Some of the recent Mars orbiter pictures confirm completely that Mars is
covered with what looks like some kind of vegetation." Clarke said.

"But I would like the geologists to look at some of these patterns and see
if any of them could be created by purely tectonic or geological processes,
rather than biological ones, the noted writer added.
----

"Ka-ching!" go the cash registers. Another $10,000 in book royalties -- and
$10,000 goes a long way in a third world country like Sri Lanka. But those
earnings will be made not on the strength of the scientific hedging he does
(far less likely to be quoted), but rather on the initial assertion. Even
so, look carefully at the wording of the supposed supporting evidence for
the assertion. I could equally well say "Some Mars orbiters pictures
confirm completely that Mars has certain surface features that look very
persuasively, to some, like a very large, humanoid face." No argument
there.

to the improbable suggestion of an untethered book like machine with a
display linked to the four corners of the globe. My aim is not to be
contrary, but to point out that our conception of what is possible should
not be limited by the limits of our current information and understanding.
