As splines are always very hard when you tighten
down the taper-lock it deforms onto the splines,
giving good slip resistance. Care must be used to
keep it perfectly sq and retighten the next day to set
it.
While your big motors may be too large, your
smaller ones under 7,000 rpm and many other AC/DC
motors would work well at a much lower cost. I did use
the word may to indicate to make sure it would be good
for the motor of choice.
AC motors are not known for hi torque, just flat
torque curves.
How would you use a key with a spline? It keys on
the edge of the splines.
