Steve Ciciora <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and Scott Colburn have been working very
hard developing a Li-Ion battery management system suitable for an EV. They
have been making a lot of progress lately, but I'm not sure when they will
actually have something you could call a "product."

All the existing Li_Ion cells must run a charge management system of some
sort on the cell level. When you go to the high voltages and currents
typical in an EV, a cell-level charge management system is required to
prevent a fire both during charge and discharge. You can't safely operate
an EV on Li-Ion cells without such a system. Also, these cells are not
cheap and would be ruined in a few cycles without a charge management
system of some sort.
