I find you can fairly accurately and easily predict total energy required to travel a given distance if you examine the topography using google maps and know your typical energy/mile usage on level or rolling terrain. For large hills I just estimate the change in elevation and distance up the hill from google. I then add the additional energy/mile expected from this work against gravity to my typical energy/mile on rolling terrain. I think this would be easy to incorporate as a feature in software in a manufactured EV. Nissan likely already knows the energy/mile used on level terrain at a given speed fairly well. The user could input the proposed route, the software could look up the elevation changes and distances, estimate the total energy required, compare this to the current SOC of the battery and report both the energy required and the energy available from your battery pack. This would be much more useful to me than the current practice of estimating remaining range based on driving that has been done in the past, since there is no quantitative way to compare my planned route with what I've already driven. Maybe they already do this?
