What pushed me to get rid of the Civvy was that even on my 3rd battery pack, I
still was somewhat in the dark on properly equalizing. Far easier to have the
computer do it, and maximize battery life and lower cost and environmental toll
that way. Also enjoy the heated seats during c-c-c-old OR winters. Concur on
sweat equity. Don't get to ask students, "Do you see batteries hooked in
_series,_ or _parallel?_ anymore...
Good luck with your decision.
Thinking about converting a gen. 5 ('92-95) Honda Civic? See

Subject: [EVDL] devil's advocate on buying a Leaf
Noticed in the paper a day or two ago that one of the SF Bay Area Nissan
dealers is offering Leaf leases for some-$3000 down and $99/mo. I think
Fed/state tax credits are still after that. A fellow EVDL'er allowed me to
drive his Leaf at the 2011 Stanford Rally - nice car, new tech... although
bigger than I need.
My nearly twenty year old (1994) VoltsRabbit conversion is due a battery plant
(#5) this fall, scheduled for Sept. Sixteen US2200 6V'ers plus a couple of
spares is going to be on the order of $1700, although I have not checked
battery prices recently. Getting some rust bubbles under the paint around the
rear side windows (don't know how hard it is to deal with that), and the
fenders are beginning to rot again (had that dealt with in the body work in
1996). Old technology, but still interesting and still works. I put it
together with my own hands, and all the sweat equity is there.
But it's getting harder and harder to be a devil's advocate about taking the
plunge to a new EV such as the Leaf. Probably one more battery plant for
another 3-5 years, but, sigh...
