What controller can drive this motor?
I used to own an S10 truck with an AC induction motor, driven by a WaveDriver
controller that was spec'ed 700V, 250A but that was 3-phase AC using 1200V
IGBTs.
Of course, it is possible to make a DC controller that does 500V using
1200V IGBTs, but designing and building your own high voltage controller is not
trivial.

I do not know of any high voltage controller doing 500V, although if the
battery pack could be split in a multiple sections, a contactor controller
could be combined with the SEPEX control to give rather smooth behavior
(decrease field current while accelerating and doubling the field at the
moment you double the Armature voltage for the next step in the contactor
control). The contactor controller itself is old skool technology, the
combination with the field control might be the most challenging part.

But there is a reason all commercial EV have an AC motor....
(now, my EV does have a DC motor - at 120V)

So what controller was this project manager planning to use?

I'd scrap the DC idea and see if these guys would sell you an AC drive.

I have an opportunity to get in on an 18 Wheeler build.  The problem is,
the project manager has already bought the motor.  A  2600lbs Monster, a
S.E.P.X. 500V, 450 amp.. its name plate says Armature 500v, 460amps and
 the
field , 300V,  6 amps.  We spun the motor over with a 12V battery, and it
does run.  Any ideas on what I can do for a contoller for this?   Regen if
possible.  Is there some way we could use something like the Soliton and a
small controller for the Field?

Thanks
Steve Clunn
