Quoting Cor van de Water <[email protected]>:

Tesla does not only have manufacturing facilities, but also Tesla
Stores.
In fact, their Fremont, CA plant has a large area set aside for customer
experience, so *even* at their plant, you can sit in a vehicle and
select the features that you want it to be built with, as well as pick
up your Model-S from the factory if you prefer that over having it
delivered home,
because you might be able to tour the plant while at it.

The Tesla Stores and Service Centers are located around the USA (and
abroad), I saw many dozens of stores on the Tesla website:
http://www.teslamotors.com/findus
So, I guess that after you have made an initial survey online and you
can't sit in someone else's Tesla (which they will often oblige) you can
go to a store and sit in a showroom model, quite similar to the dealer
experience but without most of the tricks and hard sells of the dealer
(or the general lack of knowledge about the actual car technology and
experience that you find with many dealers' sales reps)

It is not guaranteed that a store is anywhere near you though, so you
might need to wait till you see one in the street and politely
"car-jack" your way into it or wait for an event that brings a Tesla
near you (or organise one!)

Last summer such an event happened here in Hills, MN. A family of four stopped to charge their Tesla Model S 60. They were on their way to CA from Quebec, Canada. As you know, the Supercharger at Worthington, MN on I 90 had not yet been installed so they stopped and charged from our ClipperCreek CS 100. The mother fixed a lunch, the 2 boys played and the father showed me the 17 inch screen as I sat in the driver's seat. Later I got a short ride as they departed.

customers?

I looked at the VW Rabbit many years ago and the wheel well protruded
into the driver's left foot area. It was uncomfortable for anything but

short trips. I did not buy the car.

What happens when you buy a car online, it arrives, and you find the
driver's seat uncomfortable?

The dealerships provide a means of test driving a car before you buy.
How would that work with a Tesla business model?
