What astounds me is that the myth of a "free market" system persists. From

servants is only one of the uglier tricks.
Anyone who tells you a free market system is possible where human nature is
involved is either a liar or a fool.
If Tesla can lead us to a day where no one is forced to buy a car from a
dealer, that will be every bit as big a contribution to society as
popularizing EVs.

Like most businesses, the auto dealers are all for deregulation - except
when they want regulation to keep things exactly as they are to protect
their profits. Nothing "American" or "unAmerican" about it - it's like
that
in every country.
Maybe Tesla should have followed the example of Segway. Part of Dean
Kamen's preparation for launching the scooter was lobbying state
legislatures to make sure it was legal to ride on sidewalks.
Tom Corbin also took legal realities into account when he was developing
the
Sparrow 3-wheeler. Several states defined 3-wheel vehicles as motorcycles
and would have required Sparrow drivers - in a fully enclosed vehicle! - to
wear motorcycle helmets while driving. He spent some of his budget
lobbying
for more reasonable laws in those states. (He spent more of it on some
facepalm-engendering design miscues, and on personal luxuries that had
nothing to do with selling Sparrows, but that's another issue entirely.)

I'm all for ordering cars online! What would happen to America if all
car salesmen lost their jobs? I'm guessing that it would be an
apocalyptic event. They would have to get jobs elsewhere. I've always
been told that the USA is a giant jobs generator and that there are so
many jobs out there we could be crushed by the weight of them. Of
course they seem to evaporate when you are looking for a job but
'looking for a job' is usually a short term thing. I think most car
salesmen would end up in politics because, let's face it, it's pretty
much the same job (Selling cars/legislation/etc. using bullshit and
manipulation). The thing that worries most car salesman types is that
it's getting somewhat more difficult to bullshit and manipulate people.
So let's make a law that requires you to be bullshitted and manipulated
every time you have to buy a car! Brilliant!
