I should expect a 80 to 85 % transfer efficiency with generator and motor, but a chain I would expect to be better than 95% efficient. so with only human power I suspect it would be simply too inefficient. Now with a battery of sufficient capacity and using the pedals as a "Range Extender" you could ride with only the battery or pedal as hard as you wanted to achieve a real aerobic work-out. That depends on your goal for bicycling...
