Try a larger wire. Remember that 1400+ amp starting surge. You might also try "pre-spinning" the motor to reduce the starting surge. I wouldn't give up on that motor so easily. I'm not a motor expert, and someone should correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've seen, big EV motors seldom if ever fail dead shorted.
