That would work for a cheap tool; like if I was renting a multimeter. But not for big-ticket items. People won't pay a deposit that would cover the cost if they didn't return it.

Big outfits (like car rental companies, etc.) can rent expensive things for low deposits because they can do enough credit checks, and lock up your credit card etc. so if you don't return the car, they can STILL get you. I don't have that option.
