I remember back in the late 70s, a door to door salesman wanted to
sell me a microwave oven. They had just come out and were ridiculously
expensive. So, he (or his company) bundled it with a lifetime of soap -
laundry soap, hand soap, facial treatments, dishwasher soap, toilet
cleaner, you name it. Then he could sell the oven at a loss and make the
overall price more palatable.

You're right, Peri. Just as gas stations used to offer sets of dishes, or Green stamps (remember those), and other promotional give-aways to get you you in the store; EVSE owners could offer some kind of incentive to get you to use it.

"Yes, it's $5 to charge, and you get $0.10 worth of electricity; but also a free item at McDonald's. Or a free lottery ticket. Or extra minutes on your phone. Or these valuable "points" that let you purchase items from our catalog at reduced prices." :-)
